What to Watch: January 27, 2017

Thinking about what’s going on today, there are some good TV shows and sports games to watch. So, I have decided to take the liberty of putting them all into the following list for you. Enjoy!

1. Grimm-NBC (8pm/7pm c): If you haven’t watched Grimm before, find a way to watch the whole series. Grimm is terrific, especially if you love dark fairy tale-style stories. Packed with monsters and action, Grimm is sure to make you jump once in a while, but it also features some dry humor. Grimm is in its sixth and final season right now, and it’s must-watch television due to the current dramatic story-line (that I won’t spoil), the brilliance of the show’s writers, and the spectacular performances from the majority of the cast.                                                                         
2. Sleepy Hollow-FOX (9pm/8pm c): Sleepy Hollow is another quality TV show. Sleepy Hollow has demons for fantasy-lovers and plenty of the past for history-buffs (though, it tends to be modified history). Lots of dry humor makes Sleepy Hollow plenty entertaining even when the action gets thinner. Sleepy Hollow is currently in its fourth season and I would highly recommend watching the previous seasons, because the show has been slowing down a little, of late. 
3. Washington Wizards @ Atlanta Hawks (8pm ET): This is a potential playoff preview. I know there is a long way to go in the NBA season, but the Hawks and the Wizards currently hold the 4th and 5th seeds, respectively, in the NBA’s Eastern Conference standings. This game could be the momentum swing that one of the Hawks or the Wizards needs to get home-court advantage for at least one round, come playoff time. 
4. Memphis Grizzlies @ Portland Trail Blazers (10pm ET): Though the Grizzlies (7th seed) and the Trail Blazers (9th) are seven games apart in the NBA’s Western Conference standings, the Trail Blazers are only one game behind the Denver Nuggets for the 8th and final seed in the West. Also, if the Grizzlies lose momentum with a loss and drop a few games in a row, they could suddenly find themselves fighting just to get the 8th seed. Grizzlies @ Trail Blazers also features three of the biggest snubs for the All-Star game this season: Trail Blazers PG Damian Lillard, Trail Blazers SG CJ McC0llum, and Grizzlies PG Mike Conley.

#25: Losses, Lethal Weapon, and More

This week needs to end. I haven’t had a victory in my life since Friday. Today, I messed up on the last song of my orchestra concert. It wasn’t pretty. I had a pint of ice cream afterward because I needed it. Anyway, this is just the latest in a string of losses for me, so I need the losses to NOT become a habit.

Also, where is my Lethal Weapon? The latest episode of the hit, action and comedy TV show that came out this fall, aired last night. Usually, FOX posts the latest TV episode the day after it airs, but they didn’t do that today. I NEED MY LETHAL WEAPON! I look forward to watching that before I have to go to my first class of Thursday!

I already have a best bud

So, I registered for my classes next quarter classes at DU, this week. I’m on the waitlist for two journalism classes that I need for my major. I know I’m only a freshman, but I really want to get as much out of the way as quickly as possible. Anyway, I’m supposed to take a minor as well. Originally, I thought a minor in music or economics would be cool. But, I looked up “most useful degrees”, and I decided that I’m going to minor in business administration. So, registration didn’t go exactly the way I thought it would; Some for better, and some for worse.

Carolina Panthers

Founded: 1995

All-Time Winning Percentage: 45.8%

All-Time Record: (132-156)

They’re one of the youngest franchises in the NFL, and they already have a pair of Super Bowl appearances. Unfortunately, they lost both. That seems to be the way things go for the Panthers. Last year, they were one win away from a perfect regular season, AND one win away from their first Super Bowl win. So close. This season, they have won just two of seven games. It’s been a very bumpy road for the Panthers.

#31: Horror Movie, FOX, and More

Horror Movie

This is insanely crazy timing. This movie just came out today. Evidently, it is about five, kidnapped carnival workers, who are forced to participate in a life or death game called ’31’, in which, they face multiple homicidal maniacs. I think I got the gist, but here’s the trailer in case you want to verify my summary. Even after watching the trailer, I haven’t the faintest idea as to why the game is called ’31’.

NFL Game Result

It just so happens, that one NFL team won by a score of 31-28, today. That team was the Detroit Lions, who defeated the Los Angeles Rams. The Lions are now 3-3 on the year, meaning they are significantly exceeding the expectations that I set for them. It seems to help QB Matthew Stafford to NOT have WR Calvin Johnson Jr anymore, because now Stafford doesn’t feel obligated to force the ball to Johnson, and he’s making better decisions. Anyway, Congrats Lions! You kicked the Rams right before they head to London to face my New York Giants. Thank you!

FOX

Interestingly enough, the FOX station here in Denver is FOX31. That’s kind of cool…I guess. For the record, FOX is my favorite of the primary networks. Not because of their political views, but because of their amazing TV shows, and the ease with which they allow viewers to stream football games online. Unlike other networks…(cough…cough…CBS…cough).

Arizona Cardinals

All-Time Winning Percentage: 41.7%

Founded: 1920

All-Time Record: 501-700-39

This one surprised me. They’ve been pretty good recently. Then I remembered that they really hadn’t done anything until QB Kurt Warner showed up there to almost win them the Super Bowl in 2009. Despite the low franchise winning percentage, the franchise has one champion to hang on to: Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman gave up his career with the Cardinals to fight for the US Army in Afghanistan; He was killed in action by friendly fire. He is the most recent NFL athlete to have given his life for his country.
